The Importance of Pediatric Eye Care

Not only does healthy vision play a crucial role in a child's development, but eye care should be tailored to a child's unique needs. A child's eyes are still developing, and it's normal for their vision to change as they grow. Furthermore, children aren't always able to communicate or notice vision problems.

While young children may not be able to read letters, there are other ways to test their visual acuity. For example, a children's eye doctor can use tools like an ophthalmoscope or flashlight to check for abnormalities. During our vision exams, we focus on:

  • Examining the inside and outside of the child's eye
  • Checking vision clarity
  • Testing eye movement and alignment
  • Looking for issues with focusing or depth perception
  • Checking for color blindness

The American Optometric Association recommends that children have eye exams every two years. In some cases, a children's eye doctor may recommend more frequent exams. Make sure you find an Optometrist in San Marcos or Encinitas that you can trust with your child's eye health.

Myopia Control and Management

Sometimes referred to as nearsightedness, myopia is common in children. While children can correct myopia with eyeglasses, it's important to recognize that myopia can get worse in children over time. Myopia management is focused on slowing the progression of myopia.

If your child has been diagnosed with myopia, you should bring them to an optometrist in Encinitas or San Marcos that has experience with myopia control. Keeping a child's myopia level as low as possible can reduce the risk of serious vision problems later in life. Several effective treatments can dramatically lower the rate of myopia progression.

In addition to wearing eyeglasses, atropine eye drops may be used to keep your child's myopia from getting worse. Your eye doctor may also recommend that your child wears specialized orthokeratology contact lenses when they sleep at night. Vision therapy can improve a child's focusing skills and is often a major part of myopia management.
