LASIK Eye Surgery FAQs

If you’re at least 18 years of age, are relatively healthy, have good eye health, and your vision prescription has been steady for at least one year, you could be a candidate for LASIK eye surgery. LASIK eye surgery can give you clearer, sharper vision, so you don’t have to rely on glasses or contacts for improved sight. These FAQs from Modern Eyes Optometry in Carlsbad explain more about LASIK eye surgery.

LASIK FAQS

What is LASIK eye surgery?

LASIK is a surgical procedure that corrects refractive errors in your vision to improve your sight. Using an excimer laser, your eye doctor will reshape the cornea of your eye to correct problems with myopia, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Can anyone have LASIK surgery?

LASIK candidates must meet certain requirements. They must be 18 years or older, be in good health, and have good eye health. They must also have a stable vision prescription for at least a year. Pregnant and nursing women are not good candidates for LASIK, as hormonal changes in their bodies cause their eye prescription to fluctuate during this time.

Can LASIK surgery give me 20/20 vision?

There is no guarantee LASIK surgery will give you 20/20 vision, but it can dramatically improve your sight. Most people are able to live an active lifestyle without the use of glasses or contacts after LASIK.

Is LASIK safe?

When performed by a qualified LASIK eye surgeon, LASIK is a safe and effective surgical eye care treatment. At Modern Eyes Optometry, we offer pre- and post-op care for LASIK surgery. Our Carlsbad optometrist can answer any questions you may have about this procedure. We can also recommend a reputable eye surgeon to perform the surgery when the time comes.

Is LASIK painful?

Before the procedure, your eye surgeon will put anesthetic drops in your eyes so you feel no pain during the procedure. Some patients take a mild sedative as well to feel more relaxed. After the procedure, your eyes may feel slightly irritated. Taking a nap can help to rest your eyes. You’ll also be given prescription eye drops to reduce eye irritation and promote healing. For your convenience, both eyes can be treated at the same time.

How soon can I resume activities after LASIK surgery?

You should have improved vision within 24 to 48 hours after your procedure, enabling you to resume normal activities the next day. Activities like swimming and contact sports should be avoided for a few weeks until your eyes are totally healed. Our Carlsbad eye doctor will monitor your recovery to ensure no complications arise.
