Glaucoma is a disease affecting the optic nerve. Your optic nerve needs to be healthy for you to have good vision. The early signs of glaucoma are subtle and often can only be detected through a comprehensive eye exam. If you live in or around Carlsbad and would like to schedule an eye exam, contact Dr. Wang at Modern Eyes Optometry.

What is Glaucoma?

With glaucoma, the pressure rises within the eye and the increase in pressure can damage the optic nerve. There are two types of glaucoma, open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma. Both of them have different symptoms and different treatments.

Types of Glaucoma

Open-Angle: This is the most common type of glaucoma. About 90 percent of those who suffer from it in the United States have this type. It is characterized by not having any obvious symptoms. It develops slowly with the drainage canals clogging.

Angle-closure glaucoma: In this type of glaucoma, the space between the iris and the cornea closes. It is characterized by the speed with which it comes on. The drainage canals close and the space between the cornea and the iris narrows. It has noticeable symptoms and results in damage to the eye. The symptoms include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Rainbow circles around bright lights
  • Severe headaches and eye pain
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Sudden loss of vision

Treatment

Glaucoma needs to be treated and even when all of the right things are done, blindness can still occur. The damage caused by glaucoma cannot be cured but it can be slowed down. Medication can help relieve the pressure in the eye. This can be administered as eye drops. For some patients, laser surgery is the preferred treatment. Talk to your eye doctor to determine what is the best treatment for your glaucoma.
